CesviCESVI was established in 1985 and is a secular, independent association working for global solidarity. Values of unity and social justice with humankind guide its work in humanitarian aid and development, and in the reinforcement of universal human rights.

CESVI strongly believes that in assisting the poor in developing countries and people in difficult situations due to war or natural or environmental disasters, it not only helps those who directly suffer, but also contributes to the well-being of everyone in the world and for future generations. It also gives aid recipients leading roles in development work, ensuring that they work together for their own communities benefits, and it is committed to ensuring that international aid is not mere charity, nor is it influenced by donors' self-interests.

CESVI's assistance can be divided into three main categories:

• immediate help to ensure survival and to overcome emergencies;
• the rehabilitation and reconstruction of systems destroyed by war or natural disasters;
• co-operation programs and projects for the development of underprivileged social groups and poorer communities.

In Italy and Europe, CESVI runs educational programmes to develop awareness of global issues, to increase the number of donors and volunteers, and to influence private companies and public institutions to support development projects. To attain its objectives, CESVI follows these guiding principles:

1. To recognize the needs and aspirations of local communities; respecting their cultures, traditions and customs and to look for dialogue and collaboration with their organizations;
2. To work impartially for the needs of others, without distinction of sex, race, culture, or religion, whilst paying greatest attention to those most at risk: children, women, the elderly and the underprivileged;
3. To promote forms of development leading to economic independence, for example, environmental sustainability and respect for human rights;
4. To act pragmatically at all times, critically assessing the appropriateness and efficiency of its efforts to reach its defined objectives, also taking into account the satisfaction of the beneficiaries and of all those involved;
5. To ask for private donations, giving as much information as possible about fundraising objectives and the results obtained;
6. To manage funds as efficiently as possible, keeping organisational costs within acceptable limits thus ensuring that the majority of funds raised go to those most in need;
7. To audit and publish its annual accounts, clearly reporting on the objectives proposed, results obtained and any corrective action taken;
8. To recognize the value of volunteer work, and to provide information and training such as to allow partners and volunteers to reach their full potential;
9. To asses partners on their sense of responsibility and merit.
