| AWARENESS
OF DIVERSITY |
|
To
recognise diversity as a positive element
it is necessary to be aware of it. In this sense,
reflecting on differences and acknowledging that
we are all different does not imply leaving no room
for discussion, nor creating divisions and hierarchies
of values between human beings. On the contrary,
it means accepting diversity as a matter
of fact and, starting from this point, working to
find time for discussion that makes it possible
to acknowledge differences and any conflict deriving
from them.
To carry out the online Giangukai project
effectively, every teacher must understand the Giangukai
project model and its purpose, the peculiarities
of the High Intercultural Value Themes, of the Intercultural
Attitudes and Skills, and of intercultural sensitivities.
In other words, they must know the theoretical assumptions
on which the intercultural exchange model is based.
Without this awareness and sharing of the intercultural
model, it would be difficult to guide children correctly
in the action-research. To be aware and share the
model means knowing:
- why children should interact;
- how to make them interact;
- with what purposes;
- what is necessary for intercultural exchange to
take place.
For example, when children present themselves (eg,
as a picture, a drawing or even a poem), the teacher
must be aware that he/she is making them work on
their sense of belonging. When pupils observe the
work and thoughts of other children and concentrate
on aspects related to diversity, the teacher must
be aware that he/she is using the sense of decentralisation.
And when pupils observe and study the common issues,
the teacher must then be aware that he/she is unearthing
skills related to the sense of unitariness or of
convention. |
